Fall: how to prepare your garden for winter

Dear garden lovers,

With Thanksgiving around the corner, it is time to give your garden a last update. Now is the perfect time to plant your Fall bulbs, do it before the first frost comes in because they need a cold period before the Spring. With the upcoming cold it is very important to protect your garden.

Check if all the waterdrains are open. This is to make sure when the snow melts in Spring, that the water can be drained. It will also limited the damage from salt and snowmelt liquid.

Make sure that all plants are winter ready and cover the Spring flowering bulbs with mulch. This is to protect them a little bit from the harsh winter.

~ It is a good time to bring in the last Summer flowering bulbs like Dahlia's, Canna's and Begonia's. Protect them from frost in your basement or attic where it is frost free.

~ For our friends in the South: the best time to plant the bulbs is between Thanksgiving Day and Christmas. Even into the first week of January is a good time to plant your bulbs.

Fall bulbs: get ready for Fall!

Dear garden friends,

With the weather calming down and bringing the temperature in range of 50 to 75 Fahrenheit across the USA, it is time to work on your next Spring by planting Fall bulbs. This is the time to do the planning and at Dutchflowerbulbs.com we do have plenty Fall bulbs left in a wide selection!

Tips:

When planting the bulbs, plan ahead to avoid that the bulbs are eaten by rabbits, rodent or squirrels. Cover the bulbs by chicken wire or make sure you do plant bulbs like Hyacinths and Narcissus which are not eaten by animals. You can also use some deeroff or like us, use a product called Shot-Gun Repels-All. We spray our Tulip bulbs, let bulbs dry, then plant the bulbs. Then we spray it at the top of the ground after planting.

We also had a lot of success with Blood Meal: after planting, sprinkle a handful across the dirt or pot and the squirrels stay out of it. Well at least until the next big rain...
This especially helped during Fall and Spring when the squirrels are most active.

If you want to try hot pepper, the Humane Society recommends using a hot pepper wax spray, which adheres to plants and is less likely to get into animals' eyes.

What also can be done is chop a Daffodil and spread this over the bulbs to prevent your bulbs from eaten.

When preparing your flowerbeds make sure you work the ground well and make sure there is a good drainage.

Don't have time to plant your bulbs? Store them in a cool, dark place until you are placing them in the ground. But, it is best to plant them right away after you received them!

Spring bulbs: how to plant them?

Dear garden lovers,

With the arrival of Spring and a cold winter behind us, it is time to think about Spring bulbs (Summer flowering bulbs). People think with flower bulbs rather about the Fall bulbs which are coming up in the Spring, but luckily we can also garden in the Spring with flower bulbs! Plant these bulbs in Spring when the last chance of frost is gone and they will be gorgeous flowers in the summer untill Fall!

Position
Don't plant your bulbs in cold ground, this way they will never grow active and there might be a chance your bulbs will rotten away. When it is still to cold outside to plant your bulbs, store them in a cool, dark and especially dry spot. Think about a basement, a garage or a shed. Make sure there is a fine air circulation.
Decide first where you want to plant your flower bulbs, because every bulb needs a different spot. So look at the position of the sun in your garden. Most Summer-flowering bulbs are sun lovers, but some might prefer a little bit of shade. You can plant flower bulbs everywhere like in your border, lawn or pots and containers.
Loosen up the soil before you are going to plant. You can add some compost or peat moss, this will give extra nutrition. Make sure that the soil is well-drained, because most bulbs don't like to have wet feet.

Planting instructions
Once you know when and where you can plant them, is it time to get to work! Assume alway that flower bulbs must be planted twice as deep as itself is. Dahlia's and Begonia's are the exception on this rule, because they must be planted right under the surface.
Figure out what kind of effect you want with your bulbs. Do you want groups of bulbs? Then plant the bulbs closer to each other. But for a more naturel look you can hold on to this: plant an imaginary bulb between every two flower bulbs. But keep the size of the flower bulb in mind, because every bulb has a different size.
Throw the soil back in the hole when you are done with planting and push it gently. Water your bulbs directly, this way the roots of the flower bulbs can take the nutrition easier out of the soil.

Tips
The most Spring bulbs are not growing at the same time. Use this and make a plan for yourself with the blooming times. Plant the late-bloomers and tallest flowers like the Gladiolus or Dinnerplate Dahlia's in the back of your border, garden or container. Then plant the early/mid-bloomers and smaller flowers like small Dahlia's and Lillies in the front. This way you can enjoy your Spring bulbs the whole Summer!
